Incinerators - thermal disposal of dry waste on board of cruise ships

Wärtsilä incinerator back view

Wärtsilä's incinerator is a responsible solution for disposing of dry waste on board of cruise ships. The incinerator combines innovative thermal technologies with the effective paddle technology and a de-ashing system.

The water cooled paddle system requires only a short combustion chamber, due to the forward and backward movement, resulting in an optimal mixing of waste during the incinerating process. Since the combustion process takes place on the bottom of the incinerator, the air supply is above the burning waste, which results in reduced airborne ash. The paddle system has water cooled shafts and paddles made from Inconel, which cannot be overheated.

The wet de-ashing system eliminates airborne ash in the dry waste compartments, resulting in a cleaner and healthier working environment for personnel. In addition, it is easy to handle ash bags and reduces maintenance on other equipment installed nearby.

Unique incinerators for a cleaner and healthier environment

Operating in today’s cruise market can be a challenge with all the new environmental regulations applying to cruise ships. It is a requirement that the effluent from a ship must be clean and safe. Wärtsilä Water & Waste has a proven track-record in developing technology to meet these anticipated environmental standards. Our solutions have set the global benchmark for wastewater management. Wärtsilä Water & Waste can provide a complete, fully integrated package for wet and dry waste treatment.

Wärtsilä incinerator vs. conventional incinerator

System technologyWärtsilä incineratorEffectConventionalEffect
Airborne ash reductionUnique wet de-ashing system with air supply from above eliminates airborne ashCleaner and healthier working environment for personnelMoving grate with an air supply from below results in a high amount of airborne ashWorking environment with unhealthy ash to breathe
Ash handlingEasy handling of ash bagsLess work for personnelChallenging handling of dry ashMore unhealthy work for personnel
Side effects of airborne ashEliminated airborne ash reduces maintenance need on other equipment installed nearbySavings in the form of reduced maintenance needHigh amount of airborne ash requires costly maintenance on nearby equipmentIncreased costs for equipment maintenance
Operational reliabilityThe forward and backward movement of the paddle technology results in an optimal mixing of wasteThe optimal mixing of waste during incineration and water-cooled shafts and paddles made from Inconel ensures system cannot get overheatedA moving grate can transport the waste only in one direction, which is not the most efficient processWill become blocked with solid particles after a very short time resulting in overheating and stoppage
Space requirement on board for same burning capacityThe forward and backward movement of the paddle technology requires only a short combustion chamber for the necessary retention timeThe compact and short combustion chamber saves valuable space on boardA moving grate can transport the waste only in one direction, thus requiring a longer design for the necessary retention timeThe long combustion chamber results in a much larger footprint taking up much valuable space that could be used for something else

Cleaning the effluents of your cruise ship?

If you are in the cruise segment, working as an owner/operator or perhaps running a cruise yard, then there is a clear advantage in maintaining a more proactive public image. This can be achieved with a complete waste treatment package optimised for the cruise market.

Wärtsilä Water & Waste can contribute with worldwide support 24/7. The complete waste treatment package that your cruise ship needs is available from Wärtsilä Water & Waste. Having only one supplier for the whole package reduces your technical and commercial risks. In addition, the compact size can increase the vessels revenue in terms of more cabin space.
