Martin Bentley recently joined the North American Wartsila Water & Waste team as the new sales representative. He is based in Miami, USA, and has been actively involved in the maritime and shipping industry for the past 40 years.
Martin first started his seafaring journey as part of a cadetship with a cruise line. He spent more than 10 years and rose through the ranks to become Chief Engineer. He then received a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering through part-time study. Since then, Martin has been in various companies, managing complex technical work ranging from installations of advanced wastewater systems to complete retrofits of marine equipment. “One of my favorite projects was a closed-loop scrubber installation on a series of the largest cruise ships in the world. What made it all the more challenging was that the vessels were in operation, and all protocols had to be followed accordingly for the safe operations of the vessels. The projects were a success”, says Martin.
After working in this field for many decades, seeing all the different aspects of technical challenges, there is one quality that stands out for him the most and that is teamwork. “No matter how smart or experienced a manager is, he cannot do the job alone. A manager needs to be able to lead his team through integrity and honesty, constantly challenging himself to perform better through example”, concludes Martin.
