A number of chemical substances react with oxygen or other gases. This reaction may affect the quality of the cargo or can generate a hazardous situation. The atmosphere within cargo tanks containing such substances is, therefore, required to be environmentally-controlled. Four types of environmental control are used, namely inerting,drying, padding and ventilation.
