The Code first adopted by IMO in 1965 and updated regularly since then by the Subcommittee on Containers & Cargoes. Since 1991, the BC Code has been included in Chapter VI of the 1974 SOLAS Convention. This Code highlights dangers associated with the shipment of certain types of bulk cargoes, gives guidance on various procedures which should be adopted, lists products more frequently shipped in bulk, provides information on their properties and the way how they should be handled, and describes several methods to be used to determine characteristic properties of cargoes.
