A protrusion formed around an opening. Its purpose is to prevent water from running into an opening or to compensate for the strength loss due to cutting the opening in the plating.

Hatch coaming – The vertical plated structure built around a hatchway to prevent water from entering the hold, and to serve as a framework for the hatch covers.
