Class

Classification symbols and associated marks and notations assigned to a vessel by aclassification society depending on the design of the vessel, the quality of materials employed, the scantlings of the various structural members, and the outfit and equipment, all of which should be up to the standard specified by the society rules. Each classification society has its own way of recording the constructional details of a ship, which are finally entered on the certificate of class and in the Register book. The validity of the assigned class is conditioned upon due to compliance with the requirements regardingmaintenance of class.
