Proven operability for 10 Hapag Lloyd vessels
For Hapag Lloyd AG’s series of ten vessels, Wärtsilä’s shaft generator system with PWM technology was selected. The 6.6 kV / 4500 kW system provides an active power feed to the mains, while the PWM converter promotes lower operating costs and reduced maintenance requirements through less usage of the auxiliary engines. The user-friendly system has proven to be extremely successful in all ten installations.
"Most of our vessels managed from Hamburg are equipped with shaft generators as the core element of their electrical supply system for use during normal seagoing operations. The latest ten Wärtsilä shaft generators with inverters, which operate with PWM technology, have now been running for over three years. Our past experience confirms that they are likely to operate reliably in the long term. PWM technology provides extra benefits that go beyond the general advantages of shaft generators and possible savings in terms of fuel and maintenance costs. Components such as reactive power machines or duplex chokes are no longer required. Possible sources of interference and maintenance work, which might normally lead to not inconsiderable financial burdens, can be ruled out. If problems do arise, the crew can be provided with support via a land-based remote maintenance access facility designed to reduce downtime and resulting costs even further. Wärtsilä’s PWM shaft generators have proved themselves operationally with high levels of system stability, good-quality power supply performance (low THD) and short activation times."
