South Australia is widely recognised as one of the most advance renewable energy regions in the world. With an ambitious goal to achieve 100% renewable energy by 2027 and some of the highest solar and wind penetrations globally, the state is rapidly transforming its electricity system. But that transformation comes with a challenge: maintaining stability on a grid increasingly dominated by weather-driven resources. As renewable generation accelerates, so does the need for fast, flexible technologies capable of managing variability, strengthening the grid, and ensuring power remains reliable for communities and industries. The Bungama battery energy storage system (BESS) emerged as a pivotal project in meeting that need.
To support this rapidly evolving grid, Revera selected Wärtsilä Energy Storage to deliver a standalone 150 MW / 300 MWh battery energy storage system – the first stage of the multi-stage Bungama development. Designed for one of the world’s most dynamic renewable markets, the system is built to respond to fast changes in grid variability, including solar and wind output, with precision.
At the core of the Bungama project is Wärtsilä Energy Storage’s GridSolve™ Quantum High Energy (HE) technology, recognised for its advanced safety architecture and high energy-density design. The facility is orchestrated by the GEMS platform, which continuously fine-tunes operations in real time – addressing frequency fluctuations, handling system constraints, and providing rapid frequency response with millisecond-level accuracy. These integrated technologies empower Bungama to capture excess renewable energy, maintain system stability, and deliver services that go beyond what traditional power generation can offer. This initiative leverages Wärtsilä’s extensive track record in Australia, where comparable large-scale storage solutions have already fortified several grid-connected locations.
The Bungama project also highlights the power of collaboration. In addition to working with Revera, Wärtsilä worked closely with South Australian Balance of Plant contractor Enerven, marking the fourth collaboration between the two companies. This longstanding partnership brought proven efficiency, deep local knowledge, and cohesive project execution.
The strength of this collaboration was reflected not only in technical performance, but also in project execution. Working closely with Revera, Enerven, Electranet, and other stakeholders, Wärtsilä helped maintain project momentum through detailed planning, coordinated testing programmes, and innovative commissioning strategies. These efforts enabled Wärtsilä to complete its project scope ahead of schedule and efficiently execute critical hold-point and grid-compliance testing, helping reduce execution risk, accelerate key project milestones, and demonstrate the value of experienced integration in delivering complex renewable energy infrastructure.
Together, Revera, Wärtsilä, and Enerven delivered a storage asset that will serve the region for decades, ensuring that South Australia’s renewable leadership is met with equal strength in reliability.
The Bungama BESS provides the flexibility needed to support one of the world's most renewable-intensive power systems. Through services including frequency control, fast frequency response, energy arbitrage, and stability support, the system helps manage variability, maintain reliability, and keep pace with South Australia's rapidly growing renewable generation.
By reducing reliance on fossil-fuel peaking plants and enabling more of the state’s abundant clean energy to be used when it’s needed most, Bungama accelerates South Australia’s decarbonisation ambitions. And it demonstrates how energy storage can help transform ambitious renewable energy targets into a reliable, resilient power system.
The Bungama BESS is a strong example of what effective collaboration can deliver. Working closely with Wärtsilä and Enerven, we were able to combine global technology expertise with deep local knowledge to execute the project efficiently. That partnership was critical in delivering the project successfully, meeting the high technical and safety standards required for the grid.
