Australia is undergoing one of the world’s most ambitious transitions to renewable energy, and the pace of change is placing pressure on the electricity system. With the phase-out of coal-fired generation – historically the backbone of New South Wales’ reliability – the region faces an urgent need for large-scale energy storage to ensure grid stability and reliability. Meeting this challenge is essential to maintain system strength, avoid reliability gaps, and ensure the National Electricity Market (NEM) can function through this transformation.
Wärtsilä Energy Storage partnered with Origin to deliver the Eraring BESS – the largest energy storage project in the Southern Hemisphere. The system, totaling 700 MW / 3,160 MWh once complete, is being developed in four stages. Eraring Battery 1 (stages 1 and 3) reached the final phase of commissioning in December 2025 bringing online 460MW of capacity with a dispatch duration of approximately four hours. Eraring Battery 2 (stages 2 and 4) is currently in construction and scheduled to come online in the first quarter of 2027. Once operational, Eraring Battery 2 will have a capacity of 240MW, with a dispatch duration of approximately 5.8 hours.
2023: Wärtsilä selected to deliver 460 MW / 1,070 MWh using Wärtsilä’s Quantum BESS and control and optimisation software, GEMS.
2024: Wärtsilä selected to add 240 MW / 1,030 MWh with Quantum High Energy storage system, enabling grid-forming capabilities.
2024: Wärtsilä selected to increase capacity of Eraring Battery 1 to 700 MW / 2,800 MWh for extended energy dispatch.
2025: Wärtsilä selected for fourth expansion to bring total capacity to 3,160 MWh - the largest BESS in Australia.
The Eraring BESS features key technologies from Wärtsilä, including the modular GridSolve™ Quantum1 and Quantum High Energy systems for high energy density and fast deployment, and the GEMS platform for real-time monitoring, control, and grid support. Wärtsilä also implemented tailored, site-specific noise mitigation and secured a long-term service agreement.
Once complete, the Eraring BESS will deliver critical grid services that maintain energy security and reliability in New South Wales. It will enable the dispatch of stored energy for extended periods, which is essential for supporting the integration of renewable energy sources into the grid. The system will power approximately 150,000 households annually when cycled daily, providing increased reliability to consumers.

The scale of this project is impressive, delivering the largest total dispatch duration of an operating battery or project under construction in the Southern Hemisphere. The Eraring battery will dispatch enough energy to power more than 150 000 New South Wales households annually, helping to firm variable supply from wind and solar.
