Wärtsilä Caribbean Energy transition talks

Special guests Wärtsilä CEO Håkan Agnevall, and President, Wärtsilä Energy & EVP Wärtsilä Sushil Purohit.

With 3.3GW of Wärtsilä installed based in up to 98% of Caribbean Islands, we are no stranger to our market. Our customer base includes utilities, independent power producers focused on tourism market, and other industries. Our company’s global vision resonates in our Caribbean market as we all strive to walk the path towards 100% renewables in a reliable and cost efficient manner. Our solutions prove to be future-proof and flexible to balance the energy systems for our market, driven by an energy increasing demand to cope with the ever growing tourism industry and economic development of the Islands.

In the Caribbean, we see ourselves as more than business partners, as we have worked hand in hand with CARILEC (Caribbean Utilities Association) through many years of support to our Islands facing hurricanes on a yearly basis.  Working with CARILEC brings us together as Islanders to find solutions to our unique situations, and to share best practices and business solutions.

On this series of interviews, we interconnect our high level messaging of renewables integration and future fuels, to our Caribbean market development. The dialogue is moderated by Edmund Phillips, Business Development Manager, and co-hosted by Rodney George, Senior Business Development Manager.

Power system modelling in Americas

Around the globe, the energy market landscape is in transition, largely due to the rapidly decreasing cost of renewables. Major players are moving towards more flexible and sustainable energy systems with a rapidly increasing share of renewable energy, declining inflexible baseload generation, and a wider application of energy storage technology.

What does an optimal power system look like? The answer varies for each country, city and customer. Read the white papers on power system optimisation in America.

Wärtsilä’s increasing footprint in Canada shows with yet another mining company order

Mar 16, 2022, 13:00 PM by Wärtsilä Corporation

The technology group Wärtsilä will supply a natural gas fuelled 22 MW engine power plant to the mining company Argonaut Gold Inc. at its Magino Project in Canada. The order emphasises once again Wärtsilä’s growing presence in the Canadian energy market, as well as its strong position in serving the power needs for the mining industry globally. The order was booked by Wärtsilä in Q1 2022.

The power plant will provide a reliable and cost-effective supply of electricity to the Magino Gold Mine located in the Province of Ontario. The order includes four Wärtsilä 34SG gas engines, electrical equipment, auxiliaries and plant commissioning. The power plant will be in operation in 2023.

“The excellent reliability and heat rate efficiency of the Wärtsilä engines selected for this project are important factors for mining operations where power availability is absolutely essential and fuel costs are very significant. In 2021 alone, we received four engine power plant orders in Canada and three of those were from mining companies. This is a clear indication of our recognised capabilities and strength in this market,” commented Jon Rodriguez, Director, Engine Power Plants, North America, Wärtsilä Energy.

To date, Wärtsilä has supplied power generating capacity totalling 620 MW to mining operations in North America.

Flexible Wärtsilä power plants like this one utilise natural gas, the cleanest fuel widely available today. It is considered an important transitional fuel as the development of zero-carbon future alternatives continues. Wärtsilä engines are a future-proof investment that can already combust 100% synthetic carbon-neutral methane and methanol and have the ability to operate on blends of natural gas and hydrogen as well.
