Wärtsilä Oil spill response simulator

Our Oil Spill Response Simulator helps the crew train for vessel and equipment handling during oil spill response operations for both on-vessel crew and onshore command centre. The command centre personnel can also use the system for resource management training, including resource cost calculation.

The training solution consists of two parts that provide comprehensive and realistic scenarios for both onshore and on-ship teams. First is the oil spill functionality of the NTPRO 5000 navigational simulator designed to train the vessel crew. The second is the PISCES II crisis management simulator for the onshore team. The two modules may be used simultaneously or independently.

When used simultaneously, the training solution acts as a shared environment to enable joint training of various parties involved in oil spill response operation, such as bridge and deck teams and shore personnel.

Key benefits

  • Realistic crisis scenarios created for both offshore and coastal teams. The oil spill model is affected by currents and wind. It simulates spreading, evaporation, dispersion, emulsification, viscosity variation, burning and even a spill’s visual appearance (which depends on the amount of oil spill and the type). The oil flow distribution is carefully calculated and is affected by vessels, recovery objects and other structures.
  • Realistic equipment response achieved by modelling response objects (such as booms and busters) on the manufacturers’ equipment data. Interaction with various objects is modelled as well. For instance, poor handling of booms will cause leakage.
  • Realistic assessment: The exercises factor in both situational variables like the actual sea state and its limits, currents, and nature of the spill vis-a-vis the trainees’ response to such a scenario to determine the operation’s success.
  • Shared environment enables joint training of various parties involved in oil spills response operation, such as bridge and deck teams and shore personnel.

Key features

  • Vessel Crew Training: Oil spill functionality of the NTPRO 5000 navigational simulator for the vessel crew training to develop the following skills:
    - Response vessel formations, manoeuvring and communication.
    - Controlling oil booms, skimmers, busters, and oil barges.
  • Three different NOFI busters: ocean, harbour, and current buster. Busters can be operated either by two vessels or by a single vessel using a boom vane. Vessels can deploy skimmers for oil collection.
  • Modelling of response objects is based on the manufacturers’ equipment data. Speed and sea state limits are also accounted for, as well as interaction with various objects.
  • Compliance with international standards: The NTPRO 5000 has been designed in full compliance with the STCW (Standards of Training Certification of Watchkeepers) 2010, IMO model courses, International SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) Convention and OPRC Convention.
