Wärtsilä Technological simulator

Whether you are looking for standard or type-specific training, our technological simulators will allow your trainees to quickly grasp both the fundamentals and the most advanced aspects of the required training. The models cover and exceed all the STCW requirements being built to manufacturer standards.

The platform is specifically designed to train and assess engine department and liquid cargo handling personnel and runs a wide range of ship models of Engine Room Simulation and Liquid Cargo Handling Simulation, depending on the user’s choice.

Using cloud simulation technology and the latest in virtual reality, the simulators provide a highly interactive approach to training. The latest technology creates the perfect environment for the user to maximise user experience, regardless of location. Also, the cloud-based simulation is exactly the same as the physically installed simulators, sharing the same simulation software and modelling to maximise commonality and efficiency.

Instructor workplace

The functionality, shared between Engine Room and Liquid Cargo Handling simulators, allows exercise preparation, online control, monitoring of student learning process, and exercise briefing and debriefing.

Just like the physically installed TechSim systems on-premises, instructor stations can work in three operating modes:

  • On-line Operating mode allows assigning exercises to the students and supervising the exercise execution process; introducing faults and changing exercise scenarios on the fly; taking control of the student stations to demonstrate required actions. Also, in online mode, the instructor can send text messages to the students.
  • Editor Operating Mode, allowing to prepare new and edit existing exercise scenarios; demonstrate required actions to the students in the briefing mode.
  • Debriefing Operating Mode, allowing to playback of the exercise recordings to the students.

Trainee Workplace

Offers the following functionality, corresponding to the selected Engine Room or Liquid Cargo Handling model:

  • Remote control and monitoring of the Propulsion Plant from the Navigational Bridge.
  • Remote control and monitoring from the Machinery Control Room and Cargo Control Room.
  • Local control and monitoring from Engine Room and Cargo Machinery compartments and deck.
  • Control, Monitoring and Alarm PC-based system.
  • Ship’s diesel propulsion plant.
  • Ship’s electric power plant.
  • Tanker’s cargo and ballast handling systems.
  • Auxiliary systems and machinery.
  • Machinery sound imitation.
  • Alarm systems with sound.
  • 3D visualisation of the various compartment and deck with access to Local Operation Posts from within the environment and control of the functionality.
  • Closed-circuit television cameras, displaying 3D visualisation.
  • Load Calculator System application for online and offline calculation of ship stability and strength.

Flexible set up

Our technological simulators can be utilised for a blended learning approach through various mediums, including physical installations, online cloud simulators, and even flexible VR solutions. This will allow a more flexible and broader business scope and a global reach to serve your customers where it is required, not limited to your physical location.

The same simulator software used in the physical installation is also available via cloud service, allowing anytime, anywhere access anywhere for instructors and trainees.

On-premises physical installation

  • Classroom: PC-based networked class for group and team training under instructor supervision.
  • Full mission: professional hands-on training in a realistic, immersive ship-like environment.
  • Smart Realities: completely immersive experience using virtual reality headsets and touch controllers.

Cloud Simulation Service: Classroom simulators are individually licensed and deployed in the Amazon Cloud for each customer organization, with dedicated and secure storage for your simulator, exercises, data, and log files. All applicable licensed options in your cloud simulator license are synchronised with your on-premises simulator to provide maximum compatibility.

  • Instructor-led Training – online classroom for instructor and up to twelve students.
  • Student-Led training – individual detached training events.

Flexible sales options to fit different training needs and business models: one-off purchase, subscription model, pay as you use (cloud simulation), and the possibility to add or remove models.

Special applications

e-Tutor
The e-Tutor application guides trainees through the operating procedures and emergency responses, automatically assessing their performance and keeping records of their results. It allows the students to practice without the close supervision of the instructor. The instructor, on the other hand, can focus on the key features and avoid routine explanations. Exercise scenarios and recordings can be easily exchanged between the cloud classroom and the physically installed simulator. The main E-Tutor applications are:

  • Creation of simulator scenarios with complex object behaviour and equipment fault input
  • Statistical data collection (electronic log) of the exercise result and export to external applications for analysis
  • Independent (objective) assessment of the trainee performance.
  • Individual (including remote) training/tutoring/assessment using automated prompts.

Smart Realities
It provides an immersive virtual experience for users of TechSim 9. The instructor has complete control of the emergency scenarios that can be implemented into the simulator exercise. Trainees can interact with the virtual environment via the touch controllers to access local operation panels, valves, and other machinery controls and carry out complex operations such as high voltage breaker maintenance.

The 3D experience is provided in a variety of formats, including the helicopter view, 3D walkthrough, and the new Smart realities:

  • 3D helicopter view is used to show ship structure and layout of machinery and cargo deck.
  • In a 3D walk mode, trainees can move and interact with the machinery and control it with a 3D map, gamepad controller or touch screen display. Trainees must use the correct routes through the ship, providing realistic time constraints during the exercise scenario.
