Wärtsilä Solutions for Alternative Marine Power

Wärtsilä helps ship operators and port authorities to meet increasingly stringent environmental regulations by enabling ships to meet their electrical power requirements, even when the engines are shut down. By taking electrical power from shore, instead of from the engines, there are no exhaust emissions or noise pollution. Wärtsilä Shore Power solutions are available in a built in shore power system or a deck mounted container configuration.

The shore power system is standardised in a globally applicable norm the IEC 80005, so that all commercial ships and ports can easily connect. The highest adoption have high voltage solutions (6.6kV or 11kV). The IEC 80005 explicitly covers container ships, cruise ships, Ro-Ro cargo ships, LNG carriers and tankers. The rules can easily be applied also to PCTCs, ferries and mega yachts. All other vessel types like bulkers or offshore vessels use a low voltage shore power system, also standardised in the IEC norm. Wärtsilä has solutions for all above mentioned vessel types. Many cruise vessels have shore power solutions onboard.

The most progressive segment for shore power is and has been the Container vessel segment as Los Angeles Port has started already in 2014 to make use of shore power mandatory for increasing share of the fleet calling Los Angeles. The state of California, USA is extending the 2020 requirements that covered container ships, “reefers” (carrying refrigerated cargo) and cruise ships. The updated regulation adds auto carriers and tankers. And the Chinese Government also recommends that shore connection systems - or 'cold ironing' - be provided by all new bulk and cruise terminals. The EU Fit For 55 published in July 2021 includes provision for shore charging which will further drive the expansion of shore charging.

A solution suited to both newbuild and retrofit projects

The SPC system with all the necessary components is completely containerised. This standard 40ft high cube container can be installed in any suitable location onboard the vessel. However, if requested or required by the project, a 20ft container solution is also possible as a single component solution. For low voltage applications, our solution can include a step-down transformer. Furthermore, for retrofit applications we offer complete onboard installation with a connection to the existing main switchboards.
