Wärtsilä EnergoFlow and Wärtsilä EnergoProFin solutions save 2 Vitol tankers 6% on annual fuel consumption and provide 16 days of free fuel per year.

Two innovative propulsion solutions give Vitol vessels 16 days of free fuel per year

The IMO’s Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) means that ship owners and operators must act now to reduce vessel emissions. With Wärtsilä EnergoFlow and Wärtsilä EnergoProFin, global energy company Vitol saved 6% on fuel consumption and emissions for two of their tankers managed by Latvian shipping management services company LSC Group. These solutions also improved the vessels’ CII ratings.

Safety, efficiency and environmental performance are key goals for both Vitol and LSC Group. To comply with CII, they needed to install energy-saving technologies on two of the tankers managed by LSC: the Elandra Star and the Elandra Sea. Both vessels were built in 2013, meaning they should have many years of productive life ahead of them. “LSC had tried a non-Wärtsilä technology before, but with limited success. They approached us and asked if we could offer a better alternative,” says Jerome Paumier, Sales Manager, Propulsion at Wärtsilä. Wärtsilä’s solution was two simple yet effective energy-saving technologies: Wärtsilä EnergoFlow and Wärtsilä EnergoProFin.

How Wärtsilä EnergoFlow and EnergoProFin cut emissions

Wärtsilä EnergoFlow is an innovative pre-swirl stator that creates optimal inflow for the propeller by guiding one side of the stern flow in the opposite direction to the propeller rotation. This improves propulsive efficiency, reducing both fuel consumption and emissions.

Wartsila EnergoFlow brings a new level of energy-saving capabilities and increased efficiency gains while remaining affordable for customers. This is particularly beneficial in this kind of case as 50,000 DWT oil tankers have high energy demands. EnergoFlow not only has a fast payback period but also contributes to long-term savings throughout the vessel's remaining service life.

The CO2 emissions reduction for both vessels combined corresponds to the annual emissions of 510 cars each driving 25,000 km – a total of 12,750,000 km, or 318 times around the earth.

Wärtsilä EnergoProFin is an energy-saving propeller cap with fins that rotate together with the propeller. It improves propulsive efficiency by weakening the propeller hub vortex and recovering kinetic energy from the rotating flow aft of the propeller blades.

For a vessel sailing 260 days a year, the savings provided by EnergoFlow and EnergoProFin mean free fuel for 16 days of normal sailing per year. The CO2 emissions reduction for both vessels combined corresponds to the annual emissions of 510 cars each driving 25,000 km – a total of 12,750,000 km, or 318 times around the earth.

Concrete benefits delivered in a short time

The Wärtsilä solutions were installed and a trailing edge modification performed on the propeller during a normal drydock stay. Combined, these solutions have helped LSC save 6% on fuel and therefore emissions, meaning the tankers will be CII compliant for several years more.

Both Vitol and LSC are happy with these results. Vitol has recently ordered an additional three EnergoFlow systems, and at least four more are being considered for 2024. “We have a good history of cooperation with LSC and a really good working relationship,” says Paumier. “I’d especially like to thank our key contact at LSC, Technical Director Pavels Sevcovs, for all he did to help make this project a success.”
