Wärtsilä Dynamic Positioning Systems and Sensors

Practical, well-engineered DP system offering precision, reliability, and confidence, whether on the vessel, a nearby shore and even from remote locations.

Overview

Wärtsilä Voyage continues to pioneer new capabilities for dynamic positioning, from jack-up compensations to cutting-edge dynamic mooring systems integrated with customer installation systems. Beginning with the very first DP systems in the 1960s, our experience and expertise go in designing, manufacturing, and supplying state-of-the-art vessel control systems with proven fourth, fifth and sixth-generation systems still in operation alongside our latest Wärtsilä NACOS DP Platinum systems.

Designed with extensive operator input, the new system offers an intuitive interface, reducing training and transition times. Its unparalleled application flexibility for any vessel type provides owners with the most cost-effective solution available. All of this is backed by the renowned Wärtsilä Global Service Network.

Alongside, our sensors offer the perfect complement to the DP systems, with proven technology and numerous industry firsts, proving to be more than ‘just sensors.

Dynamic Positioning

DP Control Systems

Our DP Control Systems ensure that the thrusters and rudders hold the vessel at a specific heading and position despite environmental forces that might drive ships off-station. The system uses inputs from one or more heading sensors combined with position inputs from one or more position reference sensors to precisely control the vessel’s heading and position.

Dynamic Positioning

DP Sensors

When precise manoeuvres are required in a marine environment, it is not enough to rely on GNSS alone. Alternative, ultra-reliable positioning technologies are needed. Wartsila Voyage’s DP (Dynamic Positioning) Sensors, based on laser and radar technology, can provide local position information and situational awareness. This ensures you always have complete view and control of your surroundings, without GNSS gaps and lags.
