City of Unalaska selects Wärtsilä for baseload power

Wärtsilä Corporation, Trade press release 26 August 2004 at 15:00 UTC+2

The City of Unalaska has selected a baseload power plant from Wärtsilä to supply electricity for the Port of Dutch Harbor; a hub of Alaska’s commercial fishing industry.

The company will supply two Wärtsilä 12V32 generator sets for the project, producing a total output of more than 10 MW. Each generator is scheduled to run about 5,000 hours per year. The project is being permitted and designed for a total of 4 units. The contract value of the project is 4.3 million USD.

“Wärtsilä’s generators addressed the critical issues of low emissions and high reliability for Unalaska. The City of Unalaska Utility Department serves the two islands of Amaknak and Unalaska, one of the nation's most important fishing communities and ecologically unspoiled areas in Western Alaska,” said Dick Peck, Director of Public Utilities. “This new power plant will ensure delivery of reliable power to keep the town's fishing industry productive.”

Known as the “Crossroads of the Aleutians,” Unalaska Island is part of the Aleutian Island chain that extends from the Alaskan mainland into the Bering Sea. History buffs also know the community of Unalaska as Dutch Harbor, the only land in North America, besides Pearl Harbor, that was bombed by the Japanese during World War II. Today, this island town of 4,700 people is home to one of the country’s most productive commercial fishing ports, as well as a tourism industry that features pristine vistas, accentuated by active volcanoes and a wide variety of native wildlife.
