Wärtsilä introduces compact single-engine power units

Wärtsilä Corporation, Trade press release 19 March 2007 at 11:00 UTC+2

Wärtsilä Corporation has introduced the Wärtsilä PowerCubes to provide industrial customers, utilities and independent power producers with small power plants based on 1-3 generating sets. They are delivered, on turnkey basis, in an economical, reliable and fast way.

The Wärtsilä PowerCubes are complete single-engine power plants with all the auxiliaries and components needed to form a working power production unit. Each plant is of cubical construction with radiators on the roof and an exhaust gas stack close to the PowerCube or integrated within it. The PowerCubes are based on the Wärtsilä 32 or Wärtsilä 20 engines in the oil-fired Wärtsilä OilCube and the Wärtsilä 34SG engine in the gas-fired Wärtsilä GasCube, each providing up to 9 MWe. The PowerCubes will be delivered with all components and structures above ground.

The Wärtsilä PowerCubes have a low voltage electrical and automation system inside, including plant PLC (programmable logic control). The plant can be monitored and operated remotely or at freely placed working stations.

The Wärtsilä PowerCube turnkey plants present clear advantages for customers that do not have their own construction capabilities and project handling resources:

• One single, trusted supplier; Wärtsilä
• Fast and easy installation
• Operation with a minimum of staff on site
• Flexible plant extension
• A complete, standardised power production unit including all ancillaries
• Compact, modular systems with minimum work on site
• Proven technology
• Remote monitoring possibility

The standardised cubical design of the Wärtsilä PowerCubes gives flexibility in optimising the layout for the plant and lifts the concept of “step-wise” investment to new levels. Starting with a single Wärtsilä PowerCube, customers can easily develop their power plant by adding new, easily interconnecting PowerCubes as their demand for power grows.

The small footprint and the minimum interface with the surrounding environment also opens up new possibilities in placing the PowerCubes. The fact that these small power plants  have closed cooling circuit systems that reduce the water consumption to a minimum makes them perfectly suitable for remote locations or any location in which water is scarce.

There are today more than 4000 power plants totalling 36 GW in close to 140 countries around the world that have benefited from the Wärtsilä technology and knowledge. The threshold to enter into self-generation of power is low, with a reliable supplier and the Wärtsilä PowerCube power plant, every company can become their own power producer.
