Wärtsilä Corporation 13 November 2006
The 4th Wärtsilä-Mantosh Sondhi Award was conferred on National Thermal Power Corporation Ltd. (NTPC) at a ceremony held in Mumbai on 9 November 2006. Mr T. Sankaralingam, Chairman and Managing Director, NTPC, accepted the prestigious award from Mr Ole Johansson, President and CEO of Wärtsilä Corporation. The 4th Mantosh Sondhi Memorial lecture was delivered by Dr R. A. Mashelkar, Director General, Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, and Secretary, Department of Scientific & Industrial Research, Government of India, New Delhi, India
Speaking on the occasion Mr Johansson said: "The Award seeks to recognize leaders who have made a significant contribution to the power sector, leaders who have underlined the need to excel without compromising on values and principles. It is our privilege to have Mr T. Sankaralingam accept the award on behalf of NTPC. NTPC has emerged as a truly national power company, with power generating facilities in all the major regions in India".
In his acceptance speech Mr T. Sankaralingam said: “All of us at NTPC are driven by passion and the award gives recognition to that passion. This is a great honour for the entire NTPC team. The Wärtsilä Mantosh Sondhi Award is also of great significance because it gives highest importance to value-based growth and excellence. The award also reminds us of our future goals and responsibilities. I thank Wärtsilä for conferring this award upon us”.
The Wärtsilä-Mantosh Sondhi Award was instituted in 2003 to recognize outstanding achievements and contributions to the power sector. The award is in honour of Wärtsilä India’s Chairman Emeritus late Mr Mantosh Sondhi, his value-based leadership and excellence in the Indian Industry and his immense contribution to the power sector.
The eminent jury comprises of Mr Tarun Das, Chairman of the Jury and Chief Mentor - CII; Mr K. N. Shenoy, Chairman – Sobis Software (India) Pvt. Ltd. and former Chairman of ABB; Mr Subodh Bhargava, Chairman – Wärtsilä India, and Mr Banmali Agrawala, Managing Director - Wärtsilä India Ltd.
The previous recipients of the awards have been 2003:Padmashri Dr Narla Tata Rao retired Chairman of APSEB, in 2004: The Tata Power Company Ltd. accepted by its Chairman Mr Ratan Tata, and in 2005: Hon Smt Sheila Dikshit, Chief Minister of Delhi, for their significant contribution to the Indian power sector.
