Wärtsilä to manufacture propellers in India

Wärtsilä Corporation, Press release 5 September 2007 at 09:30 UTC+2

Wärtsilä Corporation has decided to manufacture Controllable Pitch Propellers in India. The investment is about EUR 5 million. The investment project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2008.

“Having propeller manufacturing capacity in India will benefit customers in India, the rest of Asia, and Europe. Customers will have access to integrated propeller and gear packages from one source, and these manufacturing facilities will also serve the whole group through component sourcing,” says Jari Salo, Vice President, Propulsion.

The propeller production project is being carried out at Wärtsilä’s existing factory located at Khopoli, near Mumbai. The plant assembles engines, reconditions and repairs engine parts and propeller blades, and manufactures gear boxes and nozzles for export. The facilities also include a Wärtsilä Land & Sea Academy training centre.

Wärtsilä currently has Controllable Pitch Propeller manufacturing in the Netherlands and Norway, and Fixed Pitch Propeller manufacturing in China.
