Two new ferries built for Japan’s Hankyu Ferry were launched in 2020. Both feature the Wärtsilä 31 engine, recognised by Guinness World Records as being the world’s most efficient 4-stroke diesel engine, and Wärtsilä’s Hybrid Scrubber system. The selection of these Wärtsilä solutions was based on the specifications requiring the most efficient engines and exhaust gas cleaning systems available.
The “Settsu” entered service in March, and the “Yamato” in June. These new vessels represent important new investments in Japan’s ferry industry, which is one of the most advanced and efficient in the world. The country’s operators are required to meet strict environmental and safety regulations.
The Wärtsilä 31 engine achieves outstanding fuel efficiency, which not only reduces fuel costs but also lowers exhaust emission levels. Wärtsilä’s Hybrid Scrubber system was chosen to ensure compliance with the IMO’s 2020 sulphur restriction regulations. It can operate in both open and closed loops, so that the wash water isn’t discharged into the sea.
For these vessels, Hankyu Ferry wanted state-of-the-art technology. The Wärtsilä 31 engine was the obvious choice for meeting the engine requirement, while the Wärtsilä Hybrid Scrubber is a very relevant environmentally sustainable solution for the 0.5 percent sulphur limit.
