Norwegian cruise and ferry company Color Line is setting new standards for sustainable maritime transport by actively adopting climate-friendly technology on board its vessels. The company has integrated a range of solutions to future-proof its vessels including hybrid propulsion, shore power systems and exhaust after-treatment technologies. Color Line operates five ships, transporting both passengers and goods on four international routes between Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Germany.
Color Line chose Wärtsilä to upgrade the exhaust treatment system on board four of its Ro-Pax vessels. The open-loop scrubber systems on board these vessels have been upgraded to hybrid scrubber systems from Wärtsilä. The close-looped functionality added by the upgrade enhances the flexibility of the system and supports compliance with strict emissions regulations.
Wärtsilä’s hybrid scrubber systems minimise sulphur oxide (SOx) emissions and make it easier for vessels to comply with local emission control regulations. The systems have the flexibility operate in both open and closed loop using seawater to remove 98% of SOx emissions.
To minimise downtime, the upgrade was completed during a scheduled maintenance break for a major engine overhaul at the Fayard shipyard in Odense, Denmark.
“This scrubber upgrade supports our focus on minimising the environmental impact of our operations. Switching to Wärtsilä’s system will not only ensure our continued compliance with existing rules and regulations, but will also future-proof our vessels against future requirements.
