    Expert insight for scrubbers - Predictive maintenance

    Expert Insight for Scrubbers is a smart service provided by Wärtsilä for optimising SOx scrubber operation. Through continuous fleet-wide tracking of vessel compliance and scrubber utilization, we help our customers get the most out of their systems. The service provides dashboards and performance indicators through an online tool, Wärtsilä’s Collaboration App, which delivers insight on how to get the most out of your Exhaust Gas Treatment system.

      We plan on unlocking even more features for the service soon, including:
    • Two-way communication features, allowing Wärtsilä engineers to troubleshoot and provide assistance to crew remotely.
    • Machine Learning fault detection systems can detect anomalies at a much earlier stage than traditional service can, giving the ship owners the ability to plan for unscheduled maintenance and avoid unwanted downtime of the scrubber system.

    These are features we’ve already rolled out for our engine portfolio, and we look forward to bringing these experiences, and expertise, to our scrubbers as well.

    Water treatment system upgrade

    Do you have a Wärtsilä closed loop or hybrid scrubber system installed? The closed loop water treatment system is an important part of the technology’s overall operation. That’s why we have several solutions to make sure you’re operating the system that suits your vessel or fleet’s requirements.

    Soot and ash from the exhaust gas is captured in the scrubbing water and the closed loop wash water treatment system ensures an effluent quality that meets various worldwide wash water regulations and restrictions. Our portfolio of closed loop water treatment systems is easy to operate with a small onboard footprint, low power consumption and low sludge waste production.

    Deplume upgrade

    Did you know that when a scrubber is installed, most of the smoke coming from the exhaust gas outlet is pure water vapour? However, appearance matters. Despite the relative lack of pollutants in the visible exhaust gas, we understand that “more smoke” often feels like “more pollution”.

    A deplume system can solve this challenge. By heating up the vapour, particles become diluted and are therefore less visible. For vessels in port, in a fjord, or sailing with passengers, reducing visible smoke can be very important to your operations.

    We can generally install deplume systems at a yard, and in five to six days, depending on the number of scrubbers installed and access to these existing technologies. Please contact us for more information on how our deplume solutions can be fitted to your vessel.

    Alkali upgrade

    Did you know that caustic soda (sodium hydroxide or NaOH) isn’t the only alkali available for closed loop mode operation? Another viable alternative is magnesium hydroxide (Mg (OH)2). Because of the different chemical and physical properties between them, some hardware and software changes are required to make the switch, though. As a result, we’ve developed an alkali upgrade concept that will make the switch to magnesium hydroxide a breeze.

    But why would one want to do such a switch? As it happens, there are a few good reasons. Magnesium hydroxide is non-hazardous and can even be cheaper than sodium hydroxide.
