Caparo Power Limited (CPL)

Reference case

Group captive power plant

Meeting the power needs of approximately 30 captive consumer industries with 99.6% reliability.

In 2010, industries in the Bawal Industrial Area, Haryana, India, faced a significant challenge due to unreliable and limited daily power supply. This led to frequent interruptions in industrial production and increased costs from dependence on diesel-based power to maintain 24/7 operations, impacting productivity and profitability.

The partnership between Wärtsilä and Caparo to set up a 26 MW group captive power plant created a state-of-the-art, highly efficient facility providing reliable and continuous power to the Bawal industries. In subsequent years, the capacity was expanded by an additional 10 MW.

Caparo is a leading diversified business group that designs, manufactures, markets, and distributes value-added steel and specialised engineering products for the automobile and engineering sectors.

Wärtsilä offers comprehensive EPC and long-term operations & maintenance services, ensuring seamless project execution and reliable ongoing operations.

Additionally, through its IPP development arm, Wärtsilä Development & Financial Services (WDFS)—a global project development and customer financing entity within Wärtsilä Energy—develops and invests equity in power projects.

The plant commenced commercial operations in 2012. This innovative collaboration has transformed the Bawal Industrial Area into a centre of productivity and growth, establishing a standard for quality power. It now provides stable and reliable power to around 30 industries, setting a benchmark for industrial power solutions throughout India.

This is what we achieved

36

MW of electrical output

30

industries benefiting from a reliable power supply

99.6%

power reliability

The entire plant concept is very transparent with clear tariff formula shared with the consumers of power, who are also equity investors. As a group captive power plant, we consolidate the demand for power generation from each individual industry. This in turn allows us to source the fuel at the best possible price and from multiple suppliers.
