Reference case

Wärtsilä supports YPF Luz with reliable, efficient wind-integrated operations.

YPF Energía Eléctrica S.A. (YPF Luz) is a leading power generation company in Argentina, with 3.8 GW of installed capacity, supplying roughly 10% of the country’s electricity demand.

Together with Wärtsilä, YPF Luz developed a flexible power solution in Comodoro Rivadavia (Chubut Province). Commissioned in March 2021, the Manantiales Behr plant supports oilfield operations and contributes to the national grid, with a total capacity of 58 MW, equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of approximately 130,000 homes.

When YPF Luz needed to secure reliable power for oilfield operations at Manantiales Behr in southern Argentina while also integrating wind energy, the company faced a complex challenge. The solution had to combine flexibility, efficiency, and dependable performance in a demanding environment, where harsh climatic conditions, low-pressure associated gas, and the need for continuous operations made energy security essential. Wärtsilä worked closely with the customer to understand these site-specific requirements and deliver a solution tailored to both immediate operational needs and long-term performance goals. The result was a 58 MW power plant delivered under a full EPC scope, equipped with five Wärtsilä 31SG engines capable of fast response to balance wind generation while ensuring stable power for critical oilfield activities. Beyond the plant delivery itself, the project was designed with lifecycle support in mind, including long-term service agreements and operational advisory support to help maintain reliability, optimise performance, and support efficient operation over time.

Today, Manantiales Behr stands as an example of how Wärtsilä can combine technology, project execution, and ongoing lifecycle partnership to help customers strengthen energy security, integrate renewables effectively, and sustain dependable performance throughout the life of the asset.

How we did it

Challenge icon

Challenge

  • Need for highly flexible and reliable power to complement wind generation
  • Requirement to ensure continuous electricity supply for critical oilfield operations
  • Hybrid plant design needed to follow wind dispatch with fast response and high operational adaptability
  • Execution constraints including COVID-19 protocols, oil and gas construction requirements, off-spec gas, low pipeline pressure, and strict approval processes
Solution icon

Solution

  • Five Wärtsilä 31SG gas engines, among the most efficient in their class (48.1% net efficiency)
  • 10 year optimised maintenance agreement
  • 5 year onsite advisory agreement for operations and maintenance support
  • Engineering and risk mitigation support throughout construction
  • The plant operates as a flexible baseload power plant, balancing wind power and supporting grid stability. It can also operate in island mode in the event of grid disturbances, ensuring energy supply for critical operations.
Benefit icon

Benefit

  • Operational flexibility through hybrid integration with wind power
  • Energy security for key oilfield assets
  • Ongoing support through Wärtsilä maintenance and advisory services
  • High efficiency (43%), availability, and reliability
  • Contribution to Argentina’s energy efficiency, aligned with Wärtsilä’s vision toward a 100% renewable future
  • Today, Manantiales Behr stands as one of the world’s leading power plants equipped with Wärtsilä 31SG engines.
