Shaping the decarbonisation of marine and energy.

Our everyday lives depend on a steady supply of electricity and goods shipped to us from across the world. Yet, today the marine and energy sectors generate over a third of global greenhouse gases.

Over 80% of world trade is carried by sea. And global electricity demand is on track to double by 2050.

That’s why at Wärtsilä, we’ve chosen to dedicate ourselves to shaping the decarbonisation of marine and energy. We help our customers make a decarbonisation journey that is not just environmentally sustainable, but financially viable, too.

The good news?

Environmentally sustainable and financially viable decarbonisation is possible with today’s technologies.

We already have most of the technology to decarbonise shipping and build a 100% renewable energy future. We develop engines that can run flexibly on low- and zero-carbon fuels – such as ammonia, hydrogen and methanol. Our innovative technologies and services help our customers cut emissions, improve efficiency and reduce costs. Our engines and batteries on land ‘balance’ renewable energy by kicking in when the sun isn’t shining or wind isn’t blowing. This makes renewables more scalable and reliable.

Green is not black or white

But green is not black or white, and no single solution will carry us through the transition. Fossil fuels will play a role while sustainable alternatives become more available. As none of us alone have all the answers, we innovate along with our ecosystems and work to reduce global emissions while securing financial viability.
