Case Studies

Easing port congestion at Calais and Boulogne ports

Calais and Boulogne are two of France’s busiest harbours. Calais handles the majority of France’s passenger traffic and is the second-largest port in Europe for RoRo vessel traffic, while Boulogne-Sur-Mer is the country’s leading fishing vessel port. The solution chosen to solve Ports' challenges was Wärtsilä Voyage’s advanced Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) as part of the VTMIS for optimising the planning and monitoring of sea traffic.

Port of Tianjin case

The Port of Tianjin needed to expand and upgrade their existing VTS. Wärtsilä Voyage launched three methods to improve the port’s efficiency. First, regulating the freight traffic based on the dynamic tidal data. Second, introduced a VTS risk assessment management system that operates in real-time to provide the operator with structured graphical information. Third, the Port Management Information System and vessel traffic data were integrated, making it possible to significantly optimise the port navigational plan and minimise the operational time of vessels. As a result, the total area covered by Wärtsilä VTS in Tianjin reached 460 square kilometres.

Sabetta Arctic Seaport case

The Arctic route is one of the most challenging ones due to extreme temperatures (up to -52°C), restricted visibility, high latitudes and electromagnetic disturbances. To ensure more precise and safer navigations, Wärtsilä Voyage installed a control centre and a radio tower, as well as two remote radio towers on the shore of the Gulf of Ob. This network system keeps track of vessels, ensures safe navigation and prevents collisions.

Port of Aҫu case

The Brazilian port needed a vessel traffic management for the inland waterway wanted to streamline logistics by optimising traffic and potential waterway hazards data in real-time. Wärtsilä Voyage suggested an integrated approach for existing sensors, that is, integrated CCTV cameras, radar, AIS (apart from VHF radios) into the Navi-Harbour system.

Turkmenbashi Port case

The port serves as a "sea gate", linking Central Asia to Europe and our feat was to ensure year-round uninterrupted monitoring, identification and classification of all the detected targets in the largest port (3600 meters long) on the Turkmenistan coastline. Wärtsilä Voyage’s VTS and TOS subsystems allowed 365 days of 24/7 surveillance, detecting targets within 30 NM from the coastline. The estimated capacity of the new seaport is about 17 million tons of cargo. It can now serve 300,000 passengers, 75,000 trucks and 400,000 containers a year.

Lerwick Harbour case

Lerwick Harbour is one of the top ports in Britain as it is strategically located at the crossroads of the North Sea and North-east Atlantic. The feat was to upgrade its existing system so that its two deep-water port entrances remain open to ships in all weathers and operates around the clock, handling over 5,000 vessels annually. This was made possible with Wärtsilä Voyage’s latest Navi-Harbour technology, VTS Control room set-up and cutting-edge sensors. We continue to provide service and support to the Lerwick Port Authority with an annual maintenance contract including Remote System Support, Service Portal Access, weekly system checks and account management.
