In 2009, Royal Caribbean International took delivery of the world's biggest cruise ship: Oasis of the Seas.
The Oasis of the Seas cruise liner is equipped with a total of six Wärtsilä 46 engines, generating more than 96 MW of power. The vessel is also equipped with four 5.5 MW Wärtsilä transverse thrusters, which are among the largest in the world. Four Wärtsilä Serck Como Multi-Stage Flash Evaporators provide fresh water for the ship, with the capacity to produce a total of 3,300 tonnes of distillate a day.
The vessel and her sister ship, the Allure of the Seas, are both equipped with Wärtsilä V46 engines with common-rail injection. In combination with the electronic control, the timing, profile, and duration of the fuel injection can all be controlled with a high degree of accuracy. Injection can even take place in stages, to provide improved low-speed operation, better load control, and longer intervals between overhauls.
The ship's power comes from the six Wärtsilä V46 marine diesel engines. Three are 16-cylinder common rail engines, and three are similar 12-cylinder versions.
In addition to providing propulsion power, the total output of some 97,020 kilowatts generated by these prime movers, is converted to electricity and used to supply hotel power for operation of the lights, the elevators, all electronics, the galleys, the water treatment plant, and all other systems used during operation of the vessel.
