#Hackyourwork: Learn a new skill in 20 hours

Are you wondering how will you ever have the time to learn something new, fast, when it has been said that learning something new required 10,000 hours? The author of “The First 20 Hours: How to Learn Anything ... Fast” Josh Kaufman has a solution for you.

Are you wondering how will you ever have the time to learn something new, fast, when it has been said that learning something new required 10,000 hours? The author of “The First 20 Hours: How to Learn Anything ... Fast” Josh Kaufman has a solution for you.

Kaufman claims it takes 20 hours to be good at something. For instance, he learned how to play ukulele in 20 hours. “The major barrier to skill acquisition isn’t intellectual, it’s emotional”, Kaufman reminds us during his speech on TED Talks. Kaufman offers four simple steps to learn a new skill.

1. Deconstruct the skill.

You should define what is the skill you want to learn. After that, break down the skill into smaller pieces to see what are the parts of the skill that help you learn the new skill. If you practise the most important things first you will be able to improve your performance in shortest amount of time possible.

2. Learn enough to self-correct.

You should get around 3–5 resources about what you are trying to learn. After that you should learn just enough so you can practise and self-correct if you make a mistake.

3. Remove practise barriers.

(e.g. distractions like television, internet…)

4. Practise at least 20 hours.

The #hackyourwork challenge:

What is a skill you want to learn? Decide what it is and deconstruct it. What was your experience like?
