Case: Powering Caribbean clean energy on Roatan, Honduras

Roatan, a picturesque island off the northern coast of Honduras, faced the challenge of securing energy reliability amid extreme weather and fluctuating energy demand.

Operating an isolated distribution grid posed infrastructural and operational challenges, including high energy costs and fuel consumption. The need for quick dispatch of back-up generation and the seamless integration of renewables into the grid became imperative for Roatan Electric Company (RECO).

In response to these challenges, we introduced a sophisticated solution: a 10 MW / 26 MWh energy storage system, monitored, controlled, and optimised by GEMS. It provides virtual spinning reserve capacity, ensuring the stability of the grid—an essential element for an island's energy security. GEMS became the orchestra conductor, guiding the optimisation of the entire hybrid system. This included the existing power plant supported by Wärtsilä engines, solar PV, and wind assets, bringing a new era of grid flexibility to Roatan. As a result, the reliability of the grid increased substantially, leading to a significant reduction in blackouts.
