Floating power plant

While most of Wärtsilä power plants are based on land, we also have a floating power plant option, the power barge.

In this solution our standard power generation equipment is integrated to a marine classed barge hull. The power generation equipment and engine hall are installed on the barge deck. Our power barges can be relocated and are therefore a perfect solution for interim power production to alleviate local power shortages where and when needed.

Floating power plants can also provide a faster answer to increased power demand in advance of coming land-based power plants.

Advantages of a floating power plant

  • Utilising same power generation equipment as land-based installations, the barge mounted power plant retains same high efficiency, fuel flexibility, resilience, reliability etc., to mention a few.
  • Provides fast supply of electricity to areas with limited infrastructure or locations not suitable for a land-based power plant.
  • Is a mobile asset, possible to relocate or trade.
  • Does not require a large coastal site.
  • Is independent of soil quality.
  • Provides secure power supply in the event of earthquakes or floods
