Wärtsilä teams up with Clearway to optimise some of the largest solar+energy storage facilities in the world.

California and Hawaii are leading the energy transition in the United States.

As the two states increase their mix of renewable energy generation to further their aggressive carbon reduction goals, the need for energy storage technologies is paramount to the health of their electric grids.
To provide essential grid reliability in these markets, Wärtsilä is providing a 497-megawatt (MW) / 1.9-gigawatt hour (GWhac) portfolio of five energy storage systems to Clearway Energy Group, one of the largest developers and operators of clean energy in the U.S. The projects are in Hawaii and California and are coupled with solar photovoltaic (PV) resources at each site. The projects make up some of the largest co-located energy storage projects in the US.

California
Wärtsilä is supplying a total of 422 MW / 1.6 GWh of energy storage to be installed at three of Clearway’s solar facilities in Southern California.

Hawaii
Wärtsilä is supplying 75 MW / 300 MWhac of energy storage, installed and operating at Clearway’s 75 MW PV facilities in Oahu.
    Challenge
    • Help Hawaii meet its clean energy targets
    • Help Clearway ensure reliable delivery of sustainable energy from its solar PV facilities on the island of Oahu, Hawaii
    Solution
    • Wärtsilä integrated 75 MW / 300 MWh of energy storage systems with two of Clearway’s existing solar PV facilities in Hawaii
    • Wärtsilä's Service+ GAP solution ensures the energy storage systems perform optimally and on guaranteed levels
    Benefits
    • Reduced island’s reliance on imported fossil fuels and significantly cut down on greenhouse gas emissions by boosting renewable energy consumption from 15% to 65%
    • Provide stability to the Hawaiian energy market while allowing the state to continue to integrate renewable energy assets and progress toward the country’s decarbonisation goals
