Wärtsilä is supplying a special external lighting system for a new cruise ship currently under construction at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. The 150,000 GRT vessel, the “Genting Dream”, has been ordered by Dream Cruises, part of Genting Hong Kong, a global leisure company, based in Asia. The ship will be delivered in October. The order with Wärtsilä was placed in the first quarter of 2016.

The Dynamic Exterior Lighting concept developed by Project International Lighting Designers provides a stunning visual effect to the ship’s exterior profile. It has been engineered and installed by Wärtsilä Funa in close cooperation with the owner’s team and the shipyard.

The technology is based on the use of customised LED RGBW lighting devices, all of which are individually controlled to provide colour, movement and video effects. On Saturday September 10, the new system was presented to the owners of Genting Dream.

“The Funa Dynamic lighting system that we are supplying to this vessel will create something completely new and stunning. It provides a unique signature and is different to anything done before. This lighting concept will change the way people see a cruise ship arriving or departing the harbours of the world,” says Frank Meyer, Project Manager, Wärtsilä Funa International GmbH.

The 335 metres long Genting Dream is the first of two cruise vessels being built for the company. It has been purpose-built for the Chinese and other Asian markets. It will accommodate 3400 passengers and 2000 crew, and is scheduled to be in operation from November this year. Its sister ship, the World Dream, is scheduled for delivery in late 2017.
