Wärtsilä Corporation, Press release 24.9.2002

Wärtsilä has signed an agreement with the Shanghai Edward Shipbuilding Co. in China on the supply of propulsion systems for five chemical tankers. The value of the deal is approx EUR 12 million. The agreement was signed during the visit to China of Mr Jari Vilén, Finland’s foreign trade minister.

The scope of delivery covers each vessel’s entire propulsion system including engines, gearboxes, shafts and propellers. The first deliveries will be made in March next year.

"For Wärtsilä this deal represents a significant total ship power delivery to the Chinese shipbuilding market. The customer will get the entire marine propulsion system from one supplier. This raises efficiency and reduces costs at shipyards,” says Mikael Mäkinen, Group Vice President, Wärtsilä Marine division.
