Wärtsilä will supply a 310 MW Smart Power Generation plant to United Group in Bangladesh. The order comprises seventeen Wärtsilä 46 engines running on heavy fuel oil. The contract includes engineering and equipment (EEQ) and additionally an extensive five year spare parts supply agreement. The equipment is scheduled to be delivered in early 2017 and the plant will be operational in March 2018. The power plant will be the largest power station based on internal combustion engines in Asia.

“Engine based power plants are the best technical solution for Bangladesh because of fluctuating demand,” says Moinuddin Hasan Rashid, Managing Director at United Anwara Power Ltd.

The economy, industry, and population are all growing in Bangladesh, which in turn drives increased investments in power generation, and particularly in non-gas powered power plants. This combined-cycle plant will be connected to the national grid in Anwara in the Chittagong district, and will supply power to local industries and population centres. Wärtsilä’s flexible power plant fits well into the erratic load pattern of Bangladesh by providing flexible power generation without losing efficiency.

“We are happy to further strengthen our good relationship with United. This power plant will increase our installed capacity with United to around 850 MW in Bangladesh,” says Göran Richardsson, Regional Director at Wärtsilä.

With this project Wärtsilä provides roughly one fifth of the grid capacity in Bangladesh with an installed base capacity of 2800 MW.
