Gouging

marine

The removal of metal from a welded seam in order to make a back-run for a butt weld. Gouging is frequently employed in preference to grinding for the removal of large quantities of weld metal prior to repairs or modifications to the weld preparation. The gouging process employs a carbon electrode to create an arc against the work piece and a jet of compressed air removes the subsequent pool of molten metal.
