When precise manoeuvres are required in a marine environment, it is not enough to rely on GNSS alone. Alternative, ultra-reliable positioning technologies are available. Wärtsilä Smart Sensor portfolio brings together technologies that assist the crew with the full situational awareness needed for all navigational situations. Based on laser, radar and camera technology can provide both local position information (where the vessel is relative to its surroundings) and situational awareness (what is around the close vicinity of the vessel).

The all-weather system also enables automated approach and position keeping with respect to a rig or another vessel.
The rotating scanner enables the system to display a traditional radar image on the ‘View Dashboard.’ This means that DP Operators can see responders in relation to the structure on a single screen — an extremely useful feature for
safe operation in low visibility conditions.

Download brochure

Wärtsilä RangeGuard

Wärtsilä is the only company to provide a complete targetless sensor solution for DP operations. We offer both laser (Wartsilä SceneScan) and radar (Wärtsilä RangeGuard) sensors — different modes of operation to ensure optimum

poor target placement, low-quality targets and false reflections are also eliminated.

Wärtsilä SceneScan

Yet another patented laser technology from the Wärtsilä Voyage stable, SceneScan, is also the only targetless laser sensor available in the market right now.
The new NACOS Platinum Solid State S-Band Radar is a next-generation marine radar system using a stabilised high power solid-state transceiver. It utilises advanced signal processing technology and comes with a 14ft antenna. Its major advantages are the
added safety provided through optimised target detection under all environmental conditions, reliability due to the compact transceiver, gearbox and antenna, and reduced lifecycle costs through minimised maintenance requirement.

Download brochure

The Wärtsilä R5 Navigation System is designed to provide optimum accuracy and reliability for demanding shipboard applications. The system offers IMO compliant precision and a built-in 270 channel combined L1 GPS and L1 GLONASS receiver. The R4 dual-channel DGNSS beacon receiver is designed to meet all requirements for commercial marine applications. The system performs continuous RAIM (Receiver Autonomous Integrity Monitoring) calculations. This allows the operator to set the required navigation accuracy and reliability via the CDU (Control and Display Unit). When position errors exceed the pre-set limit, the CDU alerts the operator to take precautionary measures.

Wärtsilä SAM 4682 is a navigation, dual axis doppler log with a large, high-resolution graphic LCD. An auxiliary, shallow water echosounder function is included. Display graphics are continuously shown on the LCD, along with complete navigation details. All IMO requirements are met or exceeded. Comprehensive interfaces are available, including NMEA0183 input and output.

The SKIPPER DL2 is a dual axis doppler speed log, working on the doppler principle, providing longitudinal and transversal ship’s speed (STW and SOG) and distance relative to the seawater. The SKIPPER DL2 gives accurate navigation parameters, measured as they happen, and presented in a logical, user-friendly way. Doppler technology is commonly considered the gold standard of speed measurement as it measures remotely (away from the effects caused by the vessel itself). Once installed, it operates even with considerable organic growth on the transducer. The DL 2 can always measure the vessel’s speed through the water and over the bottom nearing 150m of water.

Wärtsilä SAM 4642 is a navigation dual-axis electromagnetic speed log for measuring longitudinal and transverse speed through the water. A mile counter and a water temperature sensor are included. Speed information can be relayed to radar, AIS, VDR and all other relevant devices via NMEA-format connections. Interfaces between the operator unit, electronic unit and sensor comply with IEC 61162 specifications. All applicable IMO requirements are met or exceeded.

The Speed Log System Wärtsilä SATLOG SLS 4120 measures Speed Over Ground (SOG), referenced to the ship’s axes, using a gyrocompass’s input. With a precision of greater than 0.2 knots or 2 % of speed. This accuracy is compliant with the IMO performance standard for Speed and Distance Measuring Devices (SDME) IEC 61023. It allows the Wärtsilä SATLOG SLS 4120 to be used as a speed log for ground stabilising applications or docking manoeuvres. Together with an EM-Log or other log sensor measuring the Speed Through Water (STW), the Wärtsilä SATLOG SLS 4120 becomes a central display for speed-related information such as Speed Through Water and Speed Over Ground.

Up until now, the VDR functioned as an additional black box with separate interfaces to each required sub-system. The Wärtsilä VDR 4370 changes this approach and offers the benefits from true integration of the VDR into the complete navigation system. Essential Wärtsilä VDR 4370 functions are operated via the RADARPILOT, thus combining user-friendly operation with improved situational awareness -- all in a cost-effective, tailor-made state-of-the-art solution. The VDR comes as a scalable solution at a competitive price suitable for new buildings and retrofits over the complete market range.

Wärtsilä BNWAS Platinum is a full-featured Bridge Navigational Watch Alarm System as required by IMO Carriage requirements. The solution can be installed on both new vessels and existing vessels by simple installation procedures and is suitable for ships of any size. BNWAS Platinum complies with the performance standard IEC 62616 Ed.1: Maritime navigation and radio communication equipment and systems - Bridge navigational watch alarm system (BNWAS) and MSC.128(75).
