Transas won the US$16.5-million contract in the face of intense competition with a number of key VTS suppliers, both worldwide and Russian-based. The tender was called by the Maritime Port Administration of St. Petersburg, Russia, and upon review, all 11 judges unanimously voted for the Transas proposal. The municipal authorities of St. Petersburg have embarked on a full overhaul of existing VTS facilities in the Gulf of Finland in order to be able to properly operate a new oil terminal.
Within the framework of this project Transas delivered and installed a total of 17 radar sites on islands and at shore locations of the Gulf. The vessel traffic information received from the radars will be transmitted using radio relay communication lines and processed in a fleet monitoring center of St. Petersburg. Ericsson from Sweden and S.P. Radio A/S from Denmark assisted Transas in supplying hardware equipment for the project.
