Wärtsilä Smart Sensors
safe, precise vessel positioning and situational awareness

Wärtsilä Smart Sensors

Global positioning is based on GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System). It is used by millions of people every day who use mobile phones and electronic devices to navigate the roads and cities.

However, everyone has experienced times when the GNSS signal is lost and the device cannot determine the exact location. This often happens when surrounded by tall buildings or structures which obstruct or deflect the satellite signal, or when the satellite signal is being deliberately blocked or spoofed. Unfortunately, this loss of signal is not limited to the shore side environment.

When precise manoeuvres are required in a marine environment, it is impossible to rely on GNSS alone. Alternative, ultra-reliable positioning technologies are required. Wartsila’s Smart Sensors based on laser, radar and camera technology can provide both local position information (where the vessel is relative to its surroundings) and situational awareness (what’s around the close vicinity of the vessel).

Wärtsilä Smart Sensor portfolio brings together technologies that assist the crew with challenging maneuvers. For example, offshore vessels that rely on dynamic positioning (DP), cruise and cargo ships entering busy ports and harbors, ferries that have autodocking enabled and harbor craft performing technically demanding and high speed maneuvers. Smart Sensor technologies can be used to assist operations to improve safety, provide precise position, situational awareness and hazard detection in an increasingly crowded marine environment.

Laser Sensors

Wärtsilä Laser Sensors

Wärtsilä’s laser sensor offerings provide precise positioning information for DP operations and autodocking. The patented laser technology, CyScan AS, is the only laser sensor to provide positive target identification, which means that it is able to ignore reflections from all other shiny/reflective surfaces. Wartsila’s laser sensors are the most advanced innovative sensors available which makes them industry’s number one choice.

  • Positive target identification
  • Field proven false target rejection
  • GeoLock feature for autodocking

Wärtsilä Radar Sensors

Wärtsilä’s radar sensors provide both positioning information and situational awareness. With 9GHz (RadarScan, RadaScan View) and 24GHz (RangeGuard and RS24) options there is a radar sensor to meet the requirements of every close manoeuvre application, whether that be for DP operations, for detecting small objects in close proximity to the vessel or for measuring the distance to another vessel.

  • Situational Awareness
  • Automatic target detection
  • 9GHz or 24GHz options

Targetless Sensors

Wärtsilä Targetless Sensors

Wärtsilä is the only company to provide a complete targetless DP sensor solution. With both laser (SceneScan) and radar (RangeGuard) sensors, the different modes of operation ensure optimum redundancy. Targets are no longer required on the wind turbine or oil platform. This means that the asset owner no longer has to maintain them and the vessel is completely independent of the asset. Issues with poor target placement, low quality targets and false reflections are completely eliminated.

  • No targets required
  • Position off the scene
  • Type approved systems

Wärtsilä Camera Sensors

Wärtsilä’s camera systems provide real-time video images and is suitable for the harshest of marine environments. Whether installed on a cruise ship navigating the locks of the Panama Canal, a cargo ship crossing Pacific Ocean, the on a crew transfer vessel in the North Sea, the Birds Eye View, SmartQuay and Augmented reality functionalities assist the crew during the voyage, approach to port and during docking.

  • Up to 360º view around the vessel
  • Calibrated cameras for accurate distance
  • Specially designed robust hardware
Long Range Sensors

Wärtsilä Long Range Sensors

Wärtsilä’s Artemis DP position reference sensor has the longest range of any sensor currently available. Used exclusively in the offshore shuttle tanker market, the latest version builds on a legacy of over 40 years of experience. Development continues to add new and improved features and to ensure it is the most reliable sensor for these safety critical operations.

  • 10km range
  • Reliable and proven technology
  • Upgrade options

Wärtsilä Extreme Temperature Sensors

Wärtsilä’s XT (Extreme Temperature) sensor range include all the functionality and operational benefits of the conventional laser or radar DP reference technology but have been designed to operate in Arctic conditions

  • Operation down to -50ºC
  • Same, user friendly user interface
  • Radar and laser options
