Wärtsilä Power Management System (PMS)

The Wärtsilä Power Management System (PMS) is an in-house developed solution, best suited for complex diesel electric powered vessels. It contains all standard functions, such as load dependant start/stop, load sharing, synchronising, load shedding, etc., but is capable of much more. In cases where a vessel is fitted with Wärtsilä engines, generators, and propellers/thrusters, the Wärtsilä PMS ensures an optimally tuned power system that reduces the risk of performance failures and blackouts. By integrating the power, automation and propulsion, the load can be quickly reduced so as to prevent overload or blackout.

The Wärtsilä PMS has several advanced options, including control of the patented Low Loss Concept (LLC) to reduce distribution losses, increase energy availability, and save space and installation costs.

The Wärtsilä PMS is designed to be seamlessly integrated with the high end Wärtsilä automation system family (Wärtsilä Integrated Automation System). However, the Wärtsilä PMS also has the flexibility to interface with an installed automation system from a third party supplier. Wärtsilä is a provider of proven Power Management System solutions with more than 130 new build references, including for DP 2/3 Class specialised vessels to the offshore industry.

    Technical info

The benefits of the Wärtsilä Power Management System are:

    • Remote support capability for Wärtsilä’s Integrated Automation System / PMS platform, which can be extended to Wärtsilä equipment level controls (UNIC C2/C3.). Up to 60% savings of overall field attendance costs can be achieved when faults are corrected remotely.
    • Ease of integration with Wärtsilä Engine / Propulsion UNIC control systems, Wärtsilä Power Drives, Wärtsilä Switchboards and LLC Transformers, resulting in up to 50% savings in interfacing costs with corresponding reductions in the overall duration of the project.
    • Tested to meet most major classification society requirements (Lloyd’s Register, Det Norske Veritas, American Bureau of Shipping, etc.)
    • Failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA) and Hardware-in-loop (HIL) testing to meet stringent offshore requirements.
