At the Offshore Support Journal (OSJ) Annual Awards in London, the SceneScan system won the Dynamic Positioning 2020 Award. The Dynamic Positioning Award is awarded to the developer of an innovative DP product or system, or contractor responsible for an especially innovative application of DP on a project.
2018 saw the launch of SceneScan that is changing the way vessels operate and position within the marine industry. SceneScan is the first targetless laser position reference sensor (PRS) from Wärtsilä Guidance Marine.
“To me, targetless positioning means being able to stop wasting time with having to shape my environment before going to work. It means taking the environment and its shape as they are and to just crack on” says Hendrick Bußhoff, Wärtsilä and DPO.
The award recognises Wärtsilä Guidance Marine’s approach to technology and innovation. It is a badge of honour that the company will wear with pride which is industry recognised from the company's peers within the maritime world. This is the second time the award has been won as in 2017, Wärtsilä Guidance Marine won the Dynamic Positioning Award for RangeGuard Monopole, the first targetless radar position reference sensor.
Unlike traditional laser PRS, SceneScan provides tracking information relative to structures within the sensor field of view. It tracks by matching its current observation of the scene against a map generated from previous observations of the scene. For the vessel operators and asset managers, this means:

SceneScan is designed to be used for station keeping and manoeuvres close to the asset and, because it relies on the new targetless operating principle, it provides additional redundancy for safer operations as recommended by the MTS DP committee.
In April 2019, Wärtsilä Guidance Marine successfully completed sea trials of its SceneScan system. The tests were carried out onboard the Topaz Citadel, a vessel owned by Topaz Energy and Marine, a leading international offshore support vessel company providing logistics support and marine solutions to the global energy industry.
