Trigen-Cinergy (Trigen) was contracted to provide energy services for Sweetheart Cup in Owings Mills, Maryland. Trigen was expected to provide reliable power at a reduced rate to Sweetheart Cup, so as not to interrupt Sweetheart Cup’s core business concern: to be one of the United States’ largest manufacturers of single-use disposable products for the fold and beverage industry.

Wärtsilä solution
The CHP system consists of two Wärtsilä 18V34SG gas engines. The system is designed to provide steam to keep wax in its liquid form during Sweetheart Cup’s wax-coating process. During the cooler months, the CHP system will also be used to provide space heating for one of the company's buildings. In addition, this technology maximizes fuel efficiency, thus providing Sweetheart Cup with lower production costs as well as an environmental advanced investment.

The project includes a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system using urea injection into the exhaust steam, which is employed to achieve ultra-low emissions. The plant guarantees Trigen-Cinergy Solutions nitrogen oxide (NOx) levels lower than 5 ppm, which is one of the lowest emission levels for a power plant with gas reciprocating engines.
