Business White Paper: Successful test of remote control ship

Current expectations for the evolution of modern shipping includes the migration towards increasing levels of automation. Inherent in all this is the need for both remote control and remote monitoring of the automated vessel, regardless of its location on the earth’s surface.
We continue to be on the forefront of DP technology, and have the heritage of designing systems that take every aspect of each vessel’s uniqueness, with the end result of a reliable, user friendly, system.”
Wärtsilä DP - Vessel
With over 20 years of progressive designs to service the DP world, Wärtsilä Dynamic Positioning has a very versatile design that spans the marine industries vast array of vessels, ranging from Mega yachts, Work vessels, Drill Ships, Cruise ships, Naval vessels, Heavy Lift, and Jack-Up vessels to name a few.

Wärtsilä Dynamic Positioning products are suitable for any maritime platform - from luxury yachts to offshore vessels to specialized naval applications. Our systems are supplied in a variety of configurations designed to meet each customer’s requirements and growth expectations - from simple joystick systems to fully integrated vessel control systems incorporating Class 3 dynamic positioning, thruster control and vessel and power management.

Using commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) equipment, our control systems are easy to maintain and offer efficient upgrade paths for extended service life. We provide total customer satisfaction through products and services that meet or exceed customer expectations, a culture of continuous improvement and a quality management system that complies with ISO:9001:2008.

With systems supplied for both commercial and military applications, Wärtsilä Dynamic Positioning has the experience to meet any challenge.

Our DP systems are capable of integrating with the full complement of Wärtsilä vessel control systems, allowing a one stop shop approach, to not only simplify needs, but ensure reliability and single contact services.

Dynamic Positioning with Dynamic Mooring Assist (DMA)

Dynamic Positioning with Dynamic Mooring Assist (DMA) combines standard DP functions with mooring system monitoring and winch control to create a system where vessel position and heading can be maintained using thrusters and/or a multi-point mooring system. Auto and Manual modes are included to allow for the creation of a variety of capabilities including:
  • Active station keeping using thrusters and/or winches
  • Compensation for cable tension during anchor deployment
  • Compensation for mooring pattern stiffness (including thruster damping of oscillations due to the spring like nature of the mooring system)
  • Detection of anchor dragging
  • Detection and compensation for mooring line break
  • Multiple line tension settings available – higher tensions allow for tighter position keeping performance
  • Heading and Setpoint manouevers possible using either thrusters or winches
  • Revised Consequence Analysis to include mooring line break
  • Revised Holding Plot capability to include winches

An additional tab is added to the user interface to present data for each mooring winch, and to allow winches to be selected.

Dynamic Positioning with Dynamic Mooring Assist

Wärtsilä Dynamic Positioning evolved from the pioneering developments of Honeywell Offshore Division in 1961. Purchased by Nautronix PLC is the early 1990s and then L-3 Communications in May 2006, we became part of Wärtsilä in May 2015. Today we have proven 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th (Platinum) generation systems in operation around the world.

Based in San Diego, California Wärtsilä Dynamic Positioning provides solutions ranging from simple joysticks used for coordinated thruster control, to highly-sophisticated redundant DP systems, as well as fully-integrated systems combining DP, Thruster Control (TCS), Vessel Management (VMS) and Power Management (PMS).

Wärtsilä Dynamic Positioning has training simulators at Nautical Institute Accredited Centers in Houston, Singapore, Brazil, and Europe. At each location highly experienced instructors are on staff to provide dedicated DP and technical training for students for all applications including workboats, construction, dive support, etc.
