A joint project between technology group Wärtsilä and Grieg Edge, the innovation hub of Norwegian shipping group Grieg Star, promoting the use of green ammonia as a marine fuel has received important recognition from Popular Science magazine.

The MS Green Ammonia is a planned new tanker vessel that will transport and run on green ammonia. With a planned launch in 2024, the ship is still in the design phase. Nevertheless, Popular Science Magazine found the project so promising that they have awarded it the 2021 Best of What's New Award in the Engineering category.

As part of the Zero Emissions Energy Distribution at Sea (ZEEDS) initiative, Wärtsilä and Grieg Edge signed a mutual collaboration agreement under which Grieg is responsible for the vessel’s design and Wärtsilä is supplying the engine, fuel tanks, power distribution and related systems. Recently, Grieg Edge announced the latest step in developing the vessel, hiring Norwegian ship designers LMG Marin to design the ship.

"The Best of What's New Awards celebrates the year’s greatest feats of human ingenuity—the steps towards safer, healthier, more-sustainable, and happier days ahead," says Popular Science Editor-in-Chief Corinne Iozzio. "Despite the supply chain challenges making headlines in 2021, breakthroughs across all our categories have helped us glimpse a future brimming with possibilities. This collection is full of items we’re proud to dub the Best of What's New."

“This award is a tremendous honour and valuable recognition of the commitment that both Grieg Edge and Wärtsilä share in supporting the decarbonisation of shipping. We see the MS Green Ammonia project as being an important step towards realising this,” says Hans-Petter Nesse, Managing Director, Wärtsilä Norway.

“This is a unique and exciting co-creation project where we are all aiming for the same goal. It is a project that will be among the first to create a commercially viable green ammonia powered vessel, and one that will demonstrate that we can make a future fuel available and viable,” says Matt Duke, CEO Grieg Maritime Group.

Wärtsilä has taken a leading position in the research and development of future marine fuels in support of the IMO’s targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping. In early summer 2021, the company initiated the world’s first full-scale testing of ammonia as a fuel in a marine four-stroke engine.

The Popular Science Best of What’s New Awards are given following a review of thousands of new products and innovations. The winners are products or technologies that represent a significant step forward in their category.
