Wärtsilä Marine Mastermind

The quest for a game-changing start-up

KICK-OFF 4.5.2016

Hot on the heels of the Wärtsilä Marine Mastermind competition, which saw Estonian start-up Marina Ahoy clinch the grand prize, we caught up with Tero Hottinen, who has tirelessly led the charge for Wärtsilä – from the development of the competition, to selecting the winner, and now, working with Marina Ahoy to realise their idea.

  • 1) Now that the winner of Marine Mastermind has been selected, give us your thoughts on how it all went from the time the competition was first announced last October
  • 2) This is the first time Wärtsilä is even doing something like this – and dare we say – quite revolutionary. Were there unanticipated bumps along the way, and did you have to improvise and make some adjustments as you went along?
  • 3) Can you describe what’s going to happen next for the winning team?
  • 4) The other four finalists’ ideas were also very good. They would not have been selected as the top 5 amongst 47 entries otherwise. Are we planning on developing those ideas also somehow?
  • 5) The competition is a wonderful case. We’re sure Wärtsilä – and partners – would be keen to see more of such competitions focused on the marine (or even energy) industries. What are some key learning lessons you would like to impart?
  • 6) Finally, a question that’s probably on many people’s minds – will there be a Wärtsilä Marine Mastermind 2?
