The untimely arrival of ships to port is a costly problem

The marine industry is changing. The competitive environment within the industry and regulatory requirements are creating the need to address the industry’s established ways of working with a new set of criteria. One of the main sources of inefficiencies, or waste, in maritime transportation is the unnecessarily excessive speeds at which ships sail to arrive at port only to have to wait for a berthing slot.

This causes port congestion, which can hurt the ease of doing business. The financial impact is considerable while the unnecessary burning of fuel at higher speeds also adds to the levels of harmful emissions being exhausted into the atmosphere. According to multiple studies, container ships spend, for example, on average 6 % of their time at anchor waiting for berthing, which results in extra fuel consumption, higher emissions, and congested ports. Timing is everything.

Successful testing of Wärtsilä Navi-Port highlights benefits of Just-in-Time (JIT) sailing

Wärtsilä, together with project partners Carnival Maritime and the Hamburg Vessel Coordination Center (HVCC), have successfully implemented and tested a new solution for just-in-time sailing. The group has achieved the seamless exchange of data between ship and shore under real-life conditions to achieve optimal port arrival. The applied solution, Wärtsilä Navi-Port, has received approval in principle from Bureau Veritas for meeting the classification society’s cyber security requirements.

The Wärtsilä Navi-Port

Wärtsilä Navi-Port is a middleware hooked up to Wärtsilä’s Fleet Operations Solution (FOS) system, which is essentially an online infrastructure designed to enable 360° ship-to-shore reporting and fleet performance management. FOS combines individual processes that are otherwise separated, to optimise voyage planning, weather routing and fuel consumption taking into consideration charter party compliance, speed management, as well as the hull, propeller and engine condition.

Wärtsilä Navi-Port facilitates the exchange of accurate arrival times between ports and ships, enabling vessels to automatically adjust speed to achieve just-in-time arrival. Dynamic, real-time data sharing improves co-ordination allowing for modifications to course and speed should conditions at port change during a voyage. For the ports, the Wärtsilä system enables better and more efficient planning of port and terminal operations, while reducing congestion and the risk of collisions.


Automated communication significantly eliminates administrative burden

Wärtsilä Navi-Port is the first commercially available ship-to-port communication platform that has applied the port call message standard as defined by the Sea Traffic Management (STM) validation project. Wärtsilä has been one of the main contributors to the STM developments and trials, where more than 300 vessels have participated, 130 of which have used Wärtsilä navigation systems.

Today, nearly all the activity coordination from the port side happens via an agent, meaning there is a lot of point-to-point interaction. Connecting the port system with the vessel navigation system can automate correspondence and ease handling of all stakeholders involved in a ship’s safe and timely arrival to port.

How does it work?

En-route, the vessel sends a Planned Time of Arrival (PTA) to the port. If port conditions are incompatible with the given PTA, a Requested Time of Arrival (RTA) is returned, which is also received by the Wärtsilä FOS. The FOS calculates the appropriate sailing route and speed, and this processed data is sent to the vessel and/or the shipping company’s Fleet Operation Centre for approval. The RTA and optimal speed are sent to the ship’s navigation system, where they can then be accepted by the Captain for a revised PTA. On approval, the ship’s speed is automatically adjusted to respond to the new arrival time. The changed ETA is shared with the port, and updated arrival information is regularly shared between ship and shore. The ship then arrives to the berth at the allotted time, having saved fuel and having created far fewer exhaust emissions.

Applied on a global scale, this type of co-operation and technology improves port operations and resource planning further and can also lead to a significant reduction of emissions.
