Global Trends

The world of shipping is under heavy pressure. The traditional business model used in the marine industry is not agile enough to support quick changes and improvements are slow to adapt.  

Energy storage
Large investments will drive energy storage in battery technology forward! We believe that battery energy capacity will increase 10 to 20 times of  today the next  10 years, pretty much all short sea challenges can be solved on battery operation, charged from a clean energy sources.

Green Energy production
50% of research funding to major universities is channelled into Green (clean) energy production. New solutions, like bacteria producing hydrogen from water, has already been demonstrated. From the sunlight, production of electric power is showing increasing efficiency, from earlier 10% to about 25% - 34% today, while the price is plummeting, soon one of the cheapest form or energy available. Hydrogen driven fuel cells are introduced by major car manufacturers to become an emission free source of power. Maybe this concept can also be applied in ship transports? We also see a trend of local energy production, to a lower cost and based upon green energy production.

Artificial Intelligence – advanced communication technologies
Sensors, equipment and systems will in an increasing speed interact and perform autonomous actions from artificial Intelligence and by means of robots. The self-learning systems will also be available in shipping operations.

Sharing Economy
Information will be available to everybody all the time through new communication technologies. The introduction of Block chain technology in to trade will change this business. There will bemore common sharing of assets and sharing of information. This will make it easier for new players to enter the field of shipping transportation.

    EXERGO – Unlimited energy storage

    Imagine yourself entering the cruise port of Shanghai to enter a ship that is only powered by batteries! Laying silently in the port without any emissions, and leaving the harbor without sound or any visible exhaust.
    When increasing energy density in batteries, up to 20 times of today, a voyage to Japan only on batteries is possible. The Excergo will be a true disrupter in the Cruise Industry! By offering energy for propulsion as you go, we will secure our income through the whole lifetime of the ship. This business model requires off course Energy Sources with a very high reliability and monitoring from shore for monitoring requires advanced connectivity.

    Sharing assets saves money. A few years ago, it would have seemed ludicrous that an online bookshop such as Amazon would buy its own ships, but nowadays the only rule is that there are no rules. The marine market needs to wake up and smell the coffee.

    ZERO – FLOATING DISTRIBUTION HUBS

    The ultimate goal must be an emission free transportation at sea. Could this be achieved by an artificial Island located along the largest shipping routes?

    Local production of renewable (and clean) fuel could take place. Maybe emission free Hydrogen for powering Fuel cells produced from Solar or wind Power Refuelling of the vessels and redistribution of goods to battery driven shortsea ships takes place in an optimised and safe operation.

    The ocean going ship visualised in this concept is even submerged! And by that saving 30% of the fuel consumption. Obviously these ships must be designed for unmanned operations, nobody want to be a sailor submerged for 30 days!

    CONVOY

    CONVOY – Mastering the fleet

    By operating fleets of ship in a convoy up to 30% fuel could be saved by trailing in the wake of each other.

    The ships trailing behind the Master have off course not any crew on-board. The ships are also standardized, built in larger series at lower cost but at better quality and performance. The Master could accommodate the operating and maintenance and Anti-Piracy crews. The Convoying of crewless ships requires systems autonomy, Artificial Intelligence and advanced connectivity.

    BEAN TO CUP – Manufacturing during voyage

    • Imagine Coffee beans processed during the journey from Brazil to the market in Europe or Asia? Freshly made and ready for consumption at arrival in the port?
    Manufacturing while transporting raw material saves valuable time to market, increases quality and increases profitability.

    Imagine flexible production being able to follow the crops of for instance Palm oil, which shifts with the season worldwide. This factory ship will follow easily, and improve the quality of the end product by starting soonest after harvesting, saving valuable transportation time.

    The ultimate goal must be an emission free transportation at sea."
