BWMS training for smooth operation and reduced costs

All new products and systems come with a certain learning curve, some of which are steeper than others. Installation of a new ballast water management system (BWMS) can put your crew in a difficult position; do they know how to use it? Proper training ensures a smooth operation at a lower cost. BWMS training for your crew and technical staff should be part of your company’s ballast water management strategy.

The IMO has developed and adopted the “International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships’ Ballast Water and Sediments, 2004” (Ballast Water Management Convention). The purpose of the convention is to protect the marine environment from the transfer of harmful aquatic organisms in ship ballast water. Compliance with the convention requires vessels to eliminate or render harmless all aquatic organisms in ballast water. The convention entered into force on September 8, 2017. For most ships, it will become necessary to install a ballast water treatment system.

Even though there are more than 60 competing systems on the market today, to date Wärtsilä is the only marine solution provider offering Ballast Water Management Systems with OEM lifecycle support on a global platform.

Theory and hands-on training

As an owner and/or operator you want your crew to have solid skills and knowledge so that your vessels can enjoy problem-free sailing. A potential knowledge gap can be filled by Wärtsilä’s 12 training centres in important shipping locations: this is the Wärtsilä Land & Sea Academy (WLSA).

Wärtsilä offers training packages for Aquarius® Ballast Water Management Systems. The training engineers and specialists deliver courses (including ballast awareness, operation and maintenance training) tailored to the individual needs of ship owners. The training is available in electronic format, but can also be done face-to-face at the customer’s site or in classrooms and purpose-built BWMS equipment training facilities.

This training offers both theory and hands-on training to understand the fundamentals of design, operation and maintenance of Aquarius® Ballast Water Management Systems.
