Two Hankyu Ferry vessels

The “Settsu” entered service in March, and the “Yamato” in June. These new vessels represent important new investments in Japan’s ferry industry, which is one of the most advanced and efficient in the world. The country’s operators are required to meet strict environmental and safety regulations.

The Wärtsilä 31 engine achieves outstanding fuel efficiency, which not only reduces fuel costs but also lowers exhaust emission levels. Wärtsilä’s Hybrid Scrubber system was chosen to ensure compliance with the IMO’s 2020 sulphur restriction regulations. It can operate in both open and closed loops, so that the wash water isn’t discharged into the sea.

“For these vessels, Hankyu Ferry wanted state-of-the-art technology. The Wärtsilä 31 engine was the obvious choice for meeting the engine requirement, while the Wärtsilä Hybrid Scrubber is a very relevant environmentally sustainable solution for the 0.5 percent sulphur limit,”

says Takahiro Yamaguchi, Director, Hankyu Ferry Co.Ltd.

“Fuel efficiency is extremely important for Japanese ferry operators, and the Wärtsilä 31 engine delivers the energy savings demanded. Our unique technology offers the best possible emissions performance across the entire load range,”

says Rasmus Teir, Product General Manager, Wärtsilä Marine.
