Technical Data

    Operator stations with graphical user interface consist of PCs running MS Windows operating system, while PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers) are used as controllers. PLCs are mounted inside Field Termination Cabinets (FTC).

    Because of its distributed nature and communication solutions, unnecessary field cabling is avoided. The standard FTCs have a very compact design, 300x800x1200mm in size and with up to 300 I/O signals per cabinet (depending on signal type).

    Network solutions are based upon Ethernet technology distributed as far as possible to the process equipment. This gives a high degree of standardization, a large degree of openness, high transfer rate and low costs. In accordance with classification rules, important communication networks, or networks that share more than one function, are redundant or have the possibility for backup operation. The philosophy is that one fault shall not lead to fatal consequences. All networks and busses have surveillance with reporting to the alarm system.

    WIAS has a possibility for serial connection to the most relevant subcontractors’ equipment.

    Design Criteria

    Wärtsilä automation systems are designed to provide a high level of safety, economy, reliability and availability through the whole life-cycle of a vessel.

    The design is based on use of Commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components and a high level of standardization. This reduces building costs, secures high availability of spare parts and keeps maintenance costs down. As process stations, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) are used, while Personal Computers (PCs) contain the graphical user interface and storage of historical alarm and trend data.

    The number of, and configuration/topology of the automation system varies from delivery to delivery, and depends on ship type and size, as well as customer requirements.

    Wärtsilä Ecometer – When fuel waste is not an option

    The Ecometer function in WIAS estimates fuel consumption and assist the operator on how to operate the vessel the optimal way, to save fuel. The Ecometer is developed for Diesel Electric propulsion, and based on Wärtsiläs expert knowledge on diesel electric propulsion systems, and propeller and hull design. Using information from PMS, propeller curves and hull design as well as data from ECDIS it is possible to plan the route based on upon minimum fuel consumption.

    Fuel consumption reports can be generated for the different operating profiles (like steaming, DP and harbor). Saving fuel reduces operating costs and saves the environment.

    • Petrojarl Cidade de Rio Das Ostras FPSO
      The Petrojarl Cidade de Rio das Ostras was converted into a floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel in 2007. This former tanker is now capable of processing up to 15,000 barrels a day. Currently, it is producing oil from the Siri reservoir, some 85 kilometres off the Brazilian coast.
