The RadaScan system is an advanced local position reference sensor for long range use in marine Dynamic Positioning (DP) applications. The sensor is a rotating antenna mounted on the DP equipped vessel. It emits a microwave beam and accurately measures the range and bearing of one or more intelligent microwave targets called responders, allowing for the calculation of vessel position and heading. 

With an optional operating temperature of -40ºC, RadaScan is also available as an Extreme Low Temperature (XT) variant for Ice and Arctic operations.

    Microwave sensors (RadaScan and Mini RadaScan) operate with a variety of intelligent microwave targets called responders. Available in a variety of power options to suit the operation, responders can be mounted on a fixed structure, such as an offshore oil-platform for station-keeping, or on another moving vessel for track-and-follow operations.

    Power Options

    • Externally mains powered - suitable for permanently powered responders 
    • Primary Cell Pack (PCP) - suitable for permanent responders where mains power is unavailable. Cell packs should be on a one year swap out maintenance schedule. 
    • Self-contained battery pack - suitable for keeping on the vessel and handing over

    Mounting Options

    Guidance Marine provide a universal swivel bracket which is suitable for all responder power and installation options.  

    Best Practice

    Guidance Marine recommends fixed installation for all responders regardless of whether it is a short or long term operation. 

    The Primary Cell Pack (PCP) has a nominal 24/7 use expected life-time of 12 months under average temperature conditions, therefore the batteries will require replacing. No maintenance is required on the rechargeable responder.

    RadaScan XT 

    Designed for Ice and Arctic Operations 

    RadaScan XT can reach extreme low temperature, -40°C variants of the standard sensor. The XT sensor enjoys all the functionality and operational benefits of the conventional radar reference technologies but have been designed to operate in Ice and Arctic operations.

    The RadaScan Dashboard has been logically structured and carefully designed to provide a clear intuitive interface that maximises the opportunities of multi-touch user control and touch screen technology. The innovative user interface enables DPOs to use RadaScan safely and effectively whilst providing optimum positioning performance.

    During Single-Target Tracking, RadaScan uses a single responder to derive 360 degree coverage and heading data.


    During Multi-Target Tracking, RadaScan uses two responders. It can navigate off a maximum of 4 responders.


    Extended Coordinates Mode displays responder positions, range, bearing and heading information all in a succinct taskbar alongside the BEV.

    The user interface is common across all four sensors, to aid productivity and reduce cost of ownership.
